Review: Metalcrypt (5/5)
You know what one of the best things is about a Primal Fear album? You simply know exactly what you are going to get. Some of the very best pure metal on the scene today with music that reminds of the glory days of bands of the past like Maiden and Priest. I have been a fan from the first album and this being the fourth of their history I am still a big fan of the band. Primal Fear is simply one of those bands that never fail to make their fans smile.
The new album is in the same tradition of their previous works with a slight twist. This is a concept album telling a story of the eagles that adorn each one of their album covers. This is not the only slight change, as the album sounds a little more aggressive to me than previous albums but still retaining all the classic metal feel they have become known for. The guitar and vocal work is again the highlight of the album with killer riffs from start to finish.
The promo material that came along with the CD claims that this is and will be the pure metal album of the year and after listening to this 20 or 30 times already I would have to readily agree with that statement. It may seem a bit premature considering this is only the fourth month of the year but if and when you buy this album I think I will have more than a few people that agree with me on that statement. Simply another album from Primal Fear that comes HIGHLY RECOMMENDEDÂ…

                     ——-
                     41:20 min
A self-described “psychedelic power trio
specializing in zone-out progressive pop
musik,” Twinkranes dare to be different.
Spektrumtheatresnakes, their debut
album, is triple-pronged, hammer-action
psychedelia driven by tribal motorik,
barking mad synthesisers, loose
connections, dead ends and choppy
waters. If you like Silver Apples,
Wooden Shjips, car chases, krautrock and
mind-bending grooves, you’re going to
love this.
Hailing from Dublin, the trio comprises
Anto, aka Blonde Fox (Vocals & drums),
Rooster (guitars & tape manipulation)
and Ray, aka Auburn Spinner (Korg
synthesizer, rhythms and soundscapes).
Together, they take influence equally
from dance music and the weirder wings
of pop history. “We love krautrock and
prog but beyond the classics we think
there’s a lot of great music that would
have been better if it had been
processed in a pop way. That’s what
we’re doing. The album as a whole is
really us exploring the psychedelic
world like a baby snake opening its eyes
for the first time and checking what’s
around.”
Recorded over three days in November
2008 at London’s Press Play Studios
(owned by Stereolab’s drummer and used
frequently by the band) the album was
co-produced by Rick Tomlinson, aka Voice
Of The Seven Woods, and engineered by
Jimmy Robertson (Florence & The Machine,
Last Shadow Puppets). “It’s the first
electronic production that Rick has
worked on,” says Anto. “He gave it a
nice authentic sound harking back to
those seminal ’7os Krautrock records -
‘dry but driving,” you might say.”
The trio formed around three years ago,
a classic story of “boy meets boy meets
boy,” according to the band, and have to
date released two killer 7″ singles:
Plateau and Being Kong. Welcomed into
Andy Votel’s B-Music collective,
Twinkranes joined the Migrating-Caustic
-Mutable tour of the UK and Europe in
the summer of 2008. Highlights of their
career so far include performances at
Barcelona’s Primavera Sound, Ireland’s
Electric Picnic and Belfast’s
Oscillation festival plus a track (Being
Kong) featured in the latest Rupert
Grint movie Cherrybomb. “All the Harry
Potter heads are well into it,” say the
band. “They’ve been passing the track
round online like an opium pipe..
they’re all space rockers at heart
really.”
Recently, the band has taken a break
from live performance to concentrate on
the album, and in tightening tracks from
sprawling live versions to the seven
taut blasts of krauty, proggy goodness
spanning this 40-minute masterpiece.

Sting – If On A Winter’s Night… (2009)
320Kbps – High Quality

Sting – If On A Winter’s Night… (2009)
Mp3 | VBR 320 Kbps | 122 Mb
Genre: Pop, Soft Rock, Acoustic
If on a Winter’s Night presents an arc of songs that conjure the season of spirits, the eerie silences of the snow; days of solitude and reflection for some, a time of re-birth and celebration for many. With traditional music of the British Isles as their starting point, Sting and his guest musicians draw the listener in through a collection of songs, carols, and lullabies spanning the centuries – such as The Snow it Melts the Soonest (traditional Newcastle ballad), Soul Cake (traditional English “begging” song) Gabriel’s Message (14th century carol), as well as two of Sting’s own compositions – Lullaby for an Anxious Child and The Hounds of Winter. Also featured on the album is Hurdy Gurdy Man – a musical reworking and English translation (by Sting) of Der Leiermann from Schubert’s classic winter song-cycle Winterreise. For this exploration of the themes and emotions of winter Sting is joined by friend and long time colleague, guitarist Dominic Miller – and an ensemble of three remarkable musicians from Northern England and Scotland: Kathryn Tickell (fiddle and Northumbrian pipes) Julian Sutton (melodian) and Mary MacMaster (metal string Scottish harp). Additional guest artists include Vincent Ségal (cello), Daniel Hope (violin), Chris Botti (trumpet), Ibrahim Maalouf (trumpet), Stile Antico (vocal ensemble), Cyro Baptista (percussion), Bijan Chemirani (percussion) and the Webb Sisters (vocals). Together they’ve created an album with a wonderful, warm, and unique ensemble sound – an acoustic meditation on winter. %u201D

After their full coverage of classic albums from both
Radiohead and Pink Floyd, the collective known as the
Easy Star All-Stars go way back to the band and the
album that pretty much changed everything. The accent,
as always, is on the Easy part of the band’s name,
meaning this easy-skanking tribute to Sgt. Pepper’s
flows effortlessly, never getting caught up in overly
ambitious detours or ridiculously huge arrangements.
Tracks like “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” with guest
vocalist Frankie Paul and “Within You Without You” with
natural mystic Matisyahu have slick studio touches, but
the heavy lifting is left up to the performances, and
both guest vocalists are perfect choices who simply
nail it. Having been on the road frequently the
previous two years pays off, as the players are
suitably loose, creating grooves that feel natural and
alive. The ever growing importance of the horn section
comes to fruition as they shrink some of the original
album’s elaborate arrangements into smaller packages,
ones that could be imagined in a live setting or — in
the case of Ranking Roger’s “Being for the Benefit of
Mr. Kite” — at some wicked ska-fueled pool party. The
warm voice of Michael Rose closes the set on a dubby “A
Day in the Life,” a cover version drenched in reverb
with a clever imitation of the locked groove gibberish
found at the end of the original Pepper’s LP.

Review: Metalcrypt (4/5)
Here’s an album that got a lot of undeserved bad press. I bought this almost two years ago and, well, like many people, I wasn’t too impressed and after a few listens I just stored it with the other CDs. I recently digged it out along with my other Metal Church albums and time must have done some good since I now think Masterpeace is not bad at all. It might not be up to par with their early classics, but that’s a problem many bands face when releasing new stuff.
The album kicks in with “Sleeps with Thunder”, a mid to fast-paced song that reminds me a little of their early material, with a couple of great solos. “Falldown” is next and in the same vein, not as good but still a good listen. The chorus is a bit catchier although I’m not too crazy about the vocals. “Into Dust” follows. This song was the first I heard from this album since it was available on mp3.com months before release. This song is quite catchy but musically a bit more simplistic than the others. This is one of the songs where the vocals fit pretty good with the music. I’d say what’s missing in this one are memorable solos. “Kiss For The Dead” is next, opening with acoustic guitars and whispered vocals, then followed by clean soft vocals. It gets heavier around the 1:20 mark to get back to a softer sound later (and so on..). This is essentially a mix of rocker and ballad. One of the best songs on the album.
“Lb. Of Cure” is quite a change in tempo as it is one of, if not the fastest song on the album – it never slows down. Very catchy as well, with a couple of good yet somewhat discreet solos. “Faster Than Life” is next. It is a little bit slower and heavier than “Lb. Of Cure” and is the type of song you can expect from Metal Church, with the mandatory memorable solos. Surprisingly, the title track is a 1:54 instrumental song. I sure wasn’t expecting that – and it’s nothing impressive either. The next track, “All Your Sorrows” is a fast-paced rocker, Metal Church style, although the vocals are a bit annoying at times, especially when they alternate from left and right speakers (put on your headphones for maximum annoyance.) “They Signed In Blood” is a heavy rocking ballad which is pretty good musically but the vocals in the chorus are kind of not fitting. It is quite long at over 7 minutes, but there’s a lot of variation in the music during that period so it’s in no way boring. The music around the 6 minute mark is quite powerful and heavy – good stuff! “Toys in the Attic” is another fast one, not bad, again pretty catchy, and with very cool solos. The album closes on “Sand Kings”, a pretty heavy song with a good groove to it, a good song to headbang to.
Overall, musically this is a very good album. But somehow, the vocal work is not up to par with earlier releases and in some cases almost ruin the songs. Well maybe not ruin but they weaken some songs a little. I don’t think this will become a classic like the first two (three?) albums, but there’s enough good stuff in here to take it out from time to time and enjoy it. Get this, but give it time to grow on you.

Q5 Discography
Description

Best known as the band featuring guitarist Floyd Rose (inventor of the Floyd Rose Tremolo System for guitarists), Q5 debuted in 1984 with Steel The Light, a pretty
decent slice of British-influenced hard rock/metal. They were pressured to go a bit more mainstream for their next album, which they did, resulting in When The Mirror Cracks,
released in 1986 to mixed reviews. The band were in the midst of working on their third album when they dissolved, somewhere around 1987.
